Portrait of Henry VIII of England, by Hans Holbein the Younger (1537)

He was fifteen years of age when he acceded to power. So during his first years in rule he relied heavily on Thomas Wolsey, who by 1515 was made Lord Chancellor, the highest rank in government, for his loyalty and service.

In regards to military achievements, Henry was most acclaimed for the remarkable advancements of the British Navy. He built approximately fifty naval ships and installed the latest guns on several vessels, one of which being the Mary Rose, during his reign. It needs be mentioned that there were only five Royal Warships when he first came to power.

Henry was also the one who built the first naval dock in Britain at Portsmouth and the Navy Board in 1546. For these accomplishments he was known as the ‘Father of Royal Navy.’

Henry VIII was a king who led a rather bohemian personal life, one that is of an endless stream of stories – his six marriages and their disastrous end being the most famous.

His first marriage was to his deceased brother’s widow, Catherine of Aragon, a union for which he obtained the papal dispensation. Catherine gave birth to six children, but only one survived and that was the future queen, Mary I.

His second marriage was to Anne Boleyn, Catherine’s lady-in-waiting, and the sister of his other mistress. She gave birth to Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth I). And in his third marriage was to Jane Seymour, who fathered Henry’s successor Edward VI.

Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Catherine Parr were the remaining three.

Henry VIII died on January 28th , 1547, and was buried in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, next to Jane Seymour.
